Beyond its dazzling sunsets and whitewashed stucco, the Aegean island of Santorini boasts one of the most well-preserved archaeological sites of the Greek Bronze Age.

Around 1600 B.C., a cataclysmic volcanic eruption occurred on the island (known as Thera or Thira), engulfing it in layers of pumice and ash up to 180 feet deep. While knowledge of the ancient community was brought to light in the second half of the 19th century, it was not until 1967 that systematic excavations were begun in earnest.

Art historian Renee Gondek covers the known history of Santorini during the middle and late Greek Bronze Age and offers a detailed examination of the island and the colorful frescoes found in many of its preserved structures.
