View a familiar urban landscape with new eyes as you join Bill Keene on an illustrated virtual tour of the National Mall. He covers its history, design, and architecture from the earliest vision to the latest developments, as reflected in the Smithsonian’s structures as well as the National Gallery of Art and the Department of Agriculture. This program covers South Mall sites only.

Over two sessions, the virtual tour compares diverse historical styles ranging from the Gothic-Revival Castle to the exuberant Victorian Arts and Industries Building to the Beaux-Arts classicism of the Natural History Museum. Discover various interpretations of Modernism in the American History Museum, Air and Space Museum, and the Hirshhorn, in addition to later 20th-century styles represented in the sinuous curves of the American Indian Museum and the rich architectural symbolism of the African American History and Culture Museum. Look toward the Mall’s future as you examine the new Eisenhower Memorial designed by Frank Gehry.

Keene is a lecturer in history, urban studies, and architecture.
