By Joaquín Sorolla

Summer, sunshine, wind, water and waves. The light, movement, and colors of the beach have long been an inspiration for artists.

In this workshop, explore the way the masters of seaside painting—Joaquín Sorolla, Edward Henry Potthast, William Merritt Chase, Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, and John Singer Sargent—captured the atmosphere of the beach.

The artists’ methods, materials, brushwork, and use of color are studied as students   learn techniques such as how to create the effects of sunlight and shadow in their own paintings. Students are encouraged to bring in favorite beach photos to use as a reference or may choose from a selection of images provided by the instructor. How to choose a great reference image (and how to edit that image for the optimal painting composition) is discussed; students may work in either oil or acrylic paints.

A supply list may be downloaded from this page no later than 2 weeks prior to the first session.

Instructor: Adrienne Wyman
