H St. Farms’ rooftop gardens showcase urban gardening techniques (Photo: Niraj Ray)

Please Note: This program has a rescheduled date (originally April 26, 2020).

Want to reduce waste, enrich soil, and save money and the planet by skipping fertilizer? The ticket to turning trash to treasure is in the science of composting. Niraj Ray, founder of Cultivate the City, digs deep into composting; the microbial processes, how and what to compost at home, best management practices, and local resources.

See how Cultivate the City is using vermicomposting, the decomposition process that uses various species of worms to breakdown waste, and other gardening techniques at their rooftop urban farm. Cultivate the City is an organization of urban farmers dedicated to locally grown food by collaborating with other local organizations to plant and cultivate urban spaces.

Afterward, Ray answers questions about setting up at-home compost and leads a tour of the rooftop farm. Participants take home a complementary bag of vermicompost and a Rootpouch fabric planter bag.

This event is presented as part of the Smithsonian Earth Optimism Initiative.
