Historic houses on Lafayette Square (Photo: Bruce M. White)

PLEASE NOTE: This tour has an updated date and time (originally June 2, 2018 at 4 p.m.).

This tour is also available on (updated information):

Photographer Bruce White has spent much time in and around the White House, shooting it for numerous books published by the White House Historical Association, as well as others on Washington’s history and architectural heritage. As the author of At Home in the President’s Neighborhood, he’s the perfect guide for a walking tour of the area most closely connected with the residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Lafayette Park.

Through a focus on historic buildings and public sculptures, White leads a tour that tells stories of the statesmen, movers and shakers, and citizens that have been drawn to Lafayette Park from the early years of the Republic to today and some of the most famous—and infamous—events for which the neighborhood has served as a backdrop. Stops include the Blair House, the Dolley Madison House, Hay Adams Hotel, Stephen Decatur House, St. John's Church, and of course, the White House. (All visits are exteriors only).

Each tour is 1.5 hours long.
