Not every photographer hunkers down indoors during the coldest months. Some prefer to embrace winter’s bracing air and less-crowded locations to focus on more subtle palettes, open vistas, the tracery of trees, patterns of ice, and all of winter's photo ops. Find many of your own in this outdoor series in which locations may include sites along the C&O Canal, the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, in Rock Creek Park and other local parks, and urban neighborhoods.

During the initial classroom orientation, students discuss locations and times, optional tripod use, dressing for outdoor conditions, and plan 3-hour field trips to take advantage of early and (possibly) late light. (Trips could start at sunrise or end at sunset.) Participants should bring their calendars and six JPG images on a thumb drive to the first session. Schedule details and directions are provided in a follow-up email.

Subsequent sessions combine a series of weekly location shoots with a classroom review and critique session; a class blog is available to post images. By class consensus, an additional shooting session may be planned in lieu of a final classroom review.

Students should have basic photography skills and be familiar with the operation of their camera. Any manually adjustable digital or film-based format may be used, as well as a camera-appropriate tripod and cable release or remote. Students process film, if used, outside of class time.
