With their colorful lanterns, crowded stalls, and exotic sounds and smells, Taiwan’s famous night markets have, for centuries, been important gathering places for locals. Now they have become must-see destinations for tourists who want to experience some of the country’s best street snacks and shopping opportunities by moonlight. Each night market has its own history and personality, from a focus on fashion and textiles to local crafts to delicious local foods.

Hear about the history of Taiwan’s night-market culture and highlights from several of the most well-known markets, from Shilin Market in Taipai to Keelung Night Market by the sea. Learn the best way to plan your own trip to this beautiful, vibrant island.

But if you can’t get to Taiwan, you can step into our own re-creation of a Taiwanese Night Market here at the Smithsonian. Enjoy Taiwanese music, drinks, and a generous tasting of typical Taiwanese street foods created by top area chefs.
