Christ Church, Alexandria, completed in 1773

This tour is also available on:

No other town is as closely associated with George Washington as Alexandria, which he considered his home town. He surveyed its streets as a teenager in 1749, and his public memorial service was held here 50 years later. Join author and historian Garrett Peck on a tour that visits churches, houses, taverns, and other sites associated with the first president.

Bring your camera and good walking shoes; the route covers about 1.5 miles along alleyways and sidewalks. If the 2-hour walk works up a thirst, join in an optional happy hour (with cash bar) afterward.

All tours begin at the main entrance of Christ Church (118 N. Washington Street) and end at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House (323 S. Fairfax Street). A free trolley is available from King Street Metro station to the waterfront. Parking is available in Old Town, with the Market Square underground garage on Fairfax at Cameron Street recommended. Dress for outdoor walking.
