Sir Edmund Hillary said that nobody remembers who climbed Mount Everest the second time, but the truth is there have been several notable expeditions up the world’s tallest mountain. High-altitude mountaineer David Roberts, co-author of The Mountain: My Time on Everest, provides a guide to the top five.
The epic journeys he recounts include the first ascent of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953; the 1963 West Ridge climb of Thomas Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld; the Chris Bonington-led 1975 expedition to the Southwest Face; Reinhold Messner’s solo summit climb without the aid of oxygen in 1980; and the first successful ascent of the Kangshung Face by a team led by James D. Morrissey in 1983.
Generally acknowledged as the dean of American climbing literature, Roberts is a lifelong mountaineer and the award-winning author of dozens of books and articles on climbing.
