Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens is one of Washington’s treasures. The grand former home—one of several—of General Foods heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post is a beautiful oasis bordering Rock Creek Park. Hillwood’s Georgian-style mansion houses the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia and a distinguished 18th-century French decorative art collection, and is set in 25 acres of landscaped formal gardens and natural woodlands.
The day offers a chance to get a close look at all aspects of Hillwood, as the museum’s director and curators offer private lectures covering Post’s fascinating life, the Russian and French collections, and the estate’s gardens. Participants have special access to areas not usually open to the public, including the fallout shelter, former massage room, and the private projection booth and film-viewing balcony in the sumptuous pavilion, where guests often entertained with movies and square dancing.
End the day with time to explore the gardens and collections, where curators will be on hand to answer questions. Be sure to visit the charming museum shop, where you can take advantage of a special 10% discount on your purchases.
This program includes estate admission and lunch from Hillwood’s cafe.
