Residents of the greater Washington, D.C. area have an abundance of riches in the many museums close by. Follow the lead of the great masters and spend Saturday afternoons drawing from both paintings and sculptures at the American Art Museum.
Begin by learning the art of copying, which focuses on the way an artist created a particular work, not simply making a facsimile. This experience deepens both drawing skills and an understanding of how masterworks were constructed from both a technical and aesthetic perspective. Then delve into drawing classical sculpture, which can be likened to three-dimensional drawings: finely rendered composites of line and shade that create an illusion. Sculptures make ideal models for drawing exercises and aid in honing figure drawing skills. The course also serves as an introduction to drawing in public including how to work with confidence without impeding others.
This class is designed for the beginner-intermediate student who has taken a previous drawing class or has equivalent drawing experience.

Instructor Paul Glenshaw studied painting at Washington University in St. Louis. He is a STEAM educator, author, and filmmaker. He has been drawing for more than 30 years.
