This darkroom-focused class is geared for photographers with basic darkroom skills and beyond, who are interested in taking their work to the next level. Students benefit from small-group lectures, individual instruction, and independent work to gain confidence in a specific area. Possible instructional topics include, but are not limited to, toning, fiber-based printing, strengthening basic skills such as dodging and burning, and assessment of print quality. A guided lesson on processing color negatives is optional. In addition to refining technical skills, students are encouraged to study the work of photographers that provide inspiration for their work.

Participants supply their own film and photographic paper. Photo chemistry is provided.

Instructor Kim Kirkpatrick has taught for many years with The Smithsonian Associates.

6 sessions, 3 hours each
