Civil War authority Ed Bearss leads this tour tracing the second day of the Civil War’s pivotal battle, offering a detailed look at the people and places that defined Gettysburg’s history.

Day Two—July 2, 1863
Participants view the area of fierce fighting between Confederate Gen. James Longstreet and Gen. Dan Sickles’ 3rd Corps. Next, the crucial and bloody struggle for Little Round Top and the 20th Maine’s pivotal role in the fight with the 15th Alabama are outlined.

Bearss discusses Maj. Gen. Cadmus Wilcox’s Alabamians and Brig. Gen. Ambrose Wright’s Georgians at Cemetery Ridge, with final stops at Culp’s Hill and Cemetery Hill, where evening darkness frustrated Gen. Robert E. Lee’s final bid for victory on July 2. Lunch is at the Dobbin House Tavern.

8 a.m. to 7 p.m., by bus the Holiday Inn Capitol 550 C Street, S.W., with a pickup stop at the I-270 Exit 26 Urbana carpool parking lot at about 8:55 a.m.

Dress appropriately for battlefield walks.
