Civil War authority Ed Bearss leads this tour tracing the first day of the Civil War’s pivotal battle, offering a detailed look at the people and places that defined Gettysburg’s history.
Day One—July 1, 1863
Beginning at the visitor’s center, the tour proceeds to Chambersburg Pike, site of Gen. John F. Reynolds’ death, the savage fight between the Union’s “Iron Brigade” and Brig. Gen. James Archer’s Confederates, and the battle for McPherson’s Woods. Stops include the Eternal Light Peace Memorial on Oak Hill and Barlow’s Knoll. Lunch is at Farnsworth House.
8 a.m. to 7 p.m., by bus the Holiday Inn Capitol 550 C Street, S.W., with a pickup stop at the I-270 Exit 26 Urbana carpool parking lot at about 8:55 a.m.
