Among the ancient cultures that developed hand-built pottery techniques, Iranian potters created whimsical, elegant, animal shaped vessels that are perfect for ceramicists interested in studying form and technique.
After an introduction to the tradition by Alexander Nagel, assistant curator of ancient Near Eastern Art at the Freer and Sackler Galleries, students are guided through the process of creating pottery in the manner of Iranian ceramic artists. They learn to decorate the surface of their pots by carving, incising, burnishing and applying various surface treatments. Students finish their pots using traditional burnishing techniques.
The fee for shared supplies included in tuition covers 12 pounds of clay and one firing. Additional supplies are discussed on the first night of class. The option of extra firings is available. Associated fees must be agreed upon between instructor and student. This class is open to students of all levels.
