Historian Ed Bearss follows the escapades of dashingConfederate cavalry general James Ewell Brown (“Jeb”)Stuart between Oct. 10 and Oct. 12, 1862 on this tour.

Four weeks after the battle of Antietam, Stuart and 1,800 ofhis horsemen embarrassed Union Gen. George B. McClellanby riding around his army for the second time. First visit TheBower (the home of Stephen Dandridge), where Stuart had anenjoyable interlude before the ride, and then proceed toMcCoy’s Ford, where the Confederates slipped across thePotomac River at daybreak on Oct. 10, 1862.

Travel north to trace the ride ofStuart and hismen throughMercersburg. After lunch at theMercersburg Inn, proceed toChambersburg, Pennsylvania, to visitsites associated with Stuart’s 12-hourstop in town. Stuart’s return viaCashtown, Emmitsburg, andLibertytown and his recrossing thePotomac at White’s Ford on themorning of Oct. 12 are also followed.
