OCT. 28 PROGRAM (6:45 p.m.)

To many, Florentine artist Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488) is most often remembered as Leonardo da Vinci’s teacher. But his own work as a painter and sculptor reveals an extraordinary artistry–which is on display in the groundbreaking exhibition Verrocchio: Sculptor and Painter of Renaissance Florence at the National Gallery of Art (Sept. 15 to Jan. 12, 2020).

Originally trained as a goldsmith, Verrocchio became one of the most sought-after painters and sculptors in Florence, creating works for the most important art patrons of the period, including the Medici.

Toward the end of his life he moved his workshop from Florence to Venice in order to finish the statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, a former Venetian captain general, which is considered by many to be his finest work.

Art historian Aneta Georgevska-Shine explores the distinctive facets of Verrocchio’s creative approach, and his influence on artists associated with his studio, including Leonardo, Ghirlandaio, and Perugino.
