A gown from Ikigaat, Greenland, ca. 1380-1530 (Photo: Peter Danstrom / National Museum of Denmark)

A scrap of sailcloth. A lost mitten. Names carved into spindle whorls. A carefully mended dress laid to rest in a grave. These small, evocative traces open a window into the everyday lives of Viking Age women—lives often missing from the historical record. Preserved in permafrost, glaciers, and burial mounds, the textiles and the tools used to create them reveal stories that seldom appear in written sources.

Historian and broadcaster Eleanor Barraclough draws on archaeological discoveries to explore how cloth and craft shaped women’s work, creativity, and social worlds during the Viking age. By following these threads of daily life, Barraclough reveals the skills, relationships, and identities of women who helped shape the Viking world, offering a fresh, intimate perspective on a familiar history.
