Emmy and BAFTA Award–winning wildlife producer Mike Gunton offers Smithsonian Associates members an inside look into the making of the new 10-part series “The Americas” created by BBC Studios Natural History Unit in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio.
Narrated by Tom Hanks, “The Americas” showcases the wonders, secrets, and fragilities of the world’s great supercontinent. Five years in the making and filmed over 180 expeditions, it reveals the spectacular landscapes of Earth’s most varied landmass—the only one to stretch between both poles. The series offers first looks at discoveries including new species, intimate courtship rituals, dramatic deep-sea hunting, and some of nature’s strangest stories—even a frog that seems to defy death every day. Each hourlong episode features a different iconic location across the Americas.
In conversation with Joe Palca, former NPR science correspondent, executive producer Gunton shares insights into the innovative filming techniques, scientific breakthroughs, and unique challenges encountered while capturing some of nature’s most elusive moments. He reflects on his creative vision for the series, his favorite moments from production, and the lasting impact he hopes the series will have in inspiring a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
