Say an official goodbye to winter with an early-spring visit to two of Richmond’s prime attractions for garden lovers, led by Cindy Brown of Smithsonian Gardens. An historic property is the setting for the more than 50 acres of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Themed gardens include a children’s garden, rose garden, healing garden, fountain garden, and Asian-themed garden.

The domed Conservatory is the centerpiece, with 11,000 square feet encompassing areas devoted to a palm house, orchids and tropicals, and cacti and succulents. Daffodils, a harbinger of the season, are the focus of a special exhibit by the Virginia Daffodil Society.

Spend the afternoon savoring the Gilded-Age beauty of Maymont, whose original owners, Major and Mrs. James H. Dooley, knew that luxurious landscaping was an essential part of any distinctive estate. The spectacular Italian and Japanese gardens and the arboretum date from the Dooleys’ era. The 100 acres of property also include high bluffs, massive rock outcroppings, streams, and ravines. Its expansive lawns are interspersed by gazeboes, statuary, meandering walkways, and a variety of garden ornaments.

Guided tours are included at both sites. A voucher is included for lunch at the Garden Café at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.

Fringe stop at about 8:25 a.m.

The tour involves a considerable amount of standing and walking on uneven ground.

Due to its historic nature, not all parts of Maymont Estate are accessible to visitors with disabilities.
