How does nature produce the right numbers of zebras and lions on the African savanna or fish in the ocean? How do our bodies produce the right numbers of cells in our organs and bloodstream? Biologist and author Sean B. Carroll discusses the pioneering scientists who sought the answers to these simple but profoundly important questions, which came to be known as the “Serengeti Rules,” since many of its studies centered on that African ecosystem.

Through these groundbreaking discoveries, Carroll examines the interconnectedness of the regulation of life's elements, from molecules within our bodies to the diverse array of organisms in the wild. He illustrates how this deep knowledge of the rules and logic of the human body has spurred the advent of revolutionary life-saving medicines and argues that the Serengeti Rules can be used as a guide to heal an ailing planet.

Carroll’s book, The Serengeti Rules: The Quest to Discover How Life Works and Why It Matters (Princeton University Press), is available for purchase.
