A guided hike through Seneca Regional Park, located upriver from Great Falls, Virginia, makes a fall morning an adventure. This mature forest is renowned for its vibrant fall colors, making it a perfect seasonal escape. Journey with interpretive naturalist Keith Tomlinson through upland forests that wind down into secluded ravines, finally reaching the woodlands along a deeply channelized stretch of the Potomac River.

Along the way, explore the forest’s natural history, with a special focus on landscape ecology—examining how topography, vegetation, and waterways shape this unique ecosystem. The area also holds historical significance as the site of early colonial canal construction, featured on the cover of National Geographic more than 35 years ago.

Expect a moderate 3-mile hike on well-established but hilly trails. Wear sturdy footwear and be ready to immerse yourself in the rich natural and historical tapestry of this beautiful park.
