Raphael is often celebrated as one of the three great masters of the Italian High Renaissance, alongside Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Though his life was tragically cut short at 37, his artistic legacy endures as one of beauty, grace, and harmony. In little more than two decades, Raphael transformed from a promising young painter from Urbino into the favored artist of popes and princes, his name synonymous with ideal beauty and artistic perfection.
Now back in the limelight with the upcoming Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Raphael: Sublime Poetry, his genius is once again commanding attention and admiration. Art historian Elaine Ruffolo explores his extraordinary ascent—from early apprenticeships under Perugino to encounters with Michelangelo and Leonardo in Florence, and finally to his crowning achievements in Rome. Through his masterful compositions and serene figures, discover how Raphael came to embody the very spirit of the Renaissance.
