Founded in 1618 by humanist and patron Federico Borromeo, the museum was conceived as part of a broader cultural project that also included the Ambrosian Library. The museum preserves masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including works by some of the greatest artists in Italian and European art. Among its highlights are paintings by da Vinci—including Portrait of a Musician—as well as works by Caravaggio, Botticelli, Titian, and Raphael, whose monumental preparatory drawing for The School of Athens remains one of the museum’s most extraordinary treasures. Italian Renaissance art expert Rocky Ruggiero explores the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana’s history and the masterpieces that make it a cornerstone of Milan’s artistic heritage.
