As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, Philadelphia—the nation’s first capital—offers a unique window into American history, art, and culture. Art historian and longtime resident Jennie Hirsh leads an online exploration of the city’s neighborhoods, landmark sites, and cultural institutions, providing practical insights and historical context for experiencing Philadelphia like a local.

Hirsh highlights the city’s most important art and must-see works, including those at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation, while also uncovering specialized collections and hidden gems such as the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Calder Gardens, and the Brandywine Workshop and Archives. She brings the city’s history to life at the Liberty Bell Center, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History, and the Museum of the American Revolution.

Hirsh explores Philadelphia’s vibrant culinary scene—from celebrated chefs and historic restaurants to street food, coffee, and snacks—offering a taste of the city’s unique flavors. Participants receive a handout outlining suggested sights and a sample itinerary for further exploration of Philadelphia’s art, history, and culture.
