Portrait of Maffeo Barberini (detail) by Caravaggio, 1598

In the heart of Rome, Palazzo Barberini is one of the city’s finest Baroque palaces and home to an exceptional collection of paintings. Today part of the Gallerie Nazionali d’Arte Antica, the museum offers a journey through the development of Italian art from the Renaissance through the Baroque period.

Among its treasures are masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, Hans Holbein the Younger, and Filippo Lippi. The collection is particularly renowned for its outstanding Baroque works, while the palace itself, designed by architects such as Carlo Maderno, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Francesco Borromini, stands as a masterpiece of 17th-century architecture.

Italian Renaissance art expert Rocky Ruggiero discusses the significance of this collection, the ambitions of the powerful Barberini family, and the artistic innovations that transformed Rome into the cultural capital of the Baroque world.
