Feltman documenting west façade of the Notre-Dame Cathedral (Photo: Stéphanie Duchêne) The Gothic sculptures that adorn the doorways of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris were once richly painted in jewel tones, much like the stained glass of the same period. Prophets wore robes colored with azurite (blue), red ochre, and malachite (green). Angels and saints were enlivened with rose-colored cheeks and red lips. Although the 2019 fire at the cathedral was devastating, it provided researchers with a unique opportunity to investigate these colors. Art historian Jennifer M. Feltman, a leading American scholar and member of the official research team restoring Notre-Dame de Paris after the fire, explores the history of polychromy on the cathedral’s portals and discusses the international collaborative research project that is recreating their original appearance using digital art.
