We are inviting you to join us at the National Zoo on Saturday, September 24 for a special member event. A boxed picnic breakfast and seating will await you at the Patio by the Conservation Pavilion. Children’s corner offering fun educational experiences and crafts reflecting the zoo’s activities and habitats will be available.

After you enjoy your breakfast, stop by the Great Meadow at 8:45 a.m. for an educational Birds in Flight demonstration by the renowned bird behaviorist Phung Luu. Get an up-close look at exotic birds soaring overhead in this limited-run avian spectacular and witness a dazzling display of natural behaviors by his flock of exotic birds—from owls and falcons to macaws, ravens, and cockatoos.

After the demonstration follow the Olmsted Walk to the Elephants Trail and watch elephants, ostriches, and meerkats enjoying their breakfast. Animal keepers will be on hand in the small mammal house, at the Amazonia Trail, and more to talk about the animals in their habitats and Smithsonian’s ongoing commitment to conservation, research, and education to save the world’s wildlife and endangered species. Or if you prefer you can stroll leisurely at your own pace as you enjoy the sights and sounds of the Zoo waking up.
