Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt, 1633

On March 18, 1990, two thieves disguised as police officers walked into Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and committed one of the largest art thefts in modern history. Thirteen works—including masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Degas—vanished into the night.

Art historian Laura Morelli examines the stolen treasures, exploring what made these particular works so valuable and why their loss continues to haunt the art world. From Rembrandt's only seascape to Vermeer's rare concert scene, she examines the artistic significance of the missing pieces and considers the latest theories about their whereabouts.

More than three decades later, the empty frames remain on the museum’s walls, a powerful reminder of what's missing. Where are these masterpieces now? Could they resurface? And what do we lose when great art disappears from public view?
