Louis XIV remains one of the most influential and fascinating figures in European history. His reign, spanning over 70 years from 1643 to 1715, defined an era of absolute monarchy, cultural splendor, and military ambition.

Historian Alexander Mikaberidze explores the life and legacy of Louis XIV, from his early years as a boy king under the guidance of Cardinal Mazarin to his transformation into the embodiment of royal authority. He examines how Louis consolidated power, famously declaring "L'État, c'est moi" ("I am the state"), and crafted an image of unrivaled grandeur. The construction of the Palace of Versailles, a masterpiece of architecture and political strategy, symbolized his dominance and became a model for European courts. Through patronage of the arts, he cultivated figures like Molière, Lully, and Racine, turning France into the cultural capital of Europe.

Yet Louis XIV’s reign was not without challenges. His numerous wars—most famously, the War of the Spanish Succession—drained France’s resources and led to hardships for his people. His strict control over religion, including the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, suppressed Protestantism and led to profound economic and social consequences.

Despite the controversies, Louis XIV’s impact endured beyond his lifetime. His vision of centralized authority shaped modern governance, and his courtly rituals influenced monarchies across Europe. Mikaberidze surveys his successes and failures and considers how his legacy continued to influence France and the world long after his death.

Mikaberidze, a professor of history at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, is the author of more than two dozen books on European history, including The Napoleonic Wars: A Global History.
