Few animals are as instantly recognizable as the koala, an enduring symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife. Yet behind this familiar image lies a species in decline, with populations now only a fraction of what they were before European colonization.

Wildlife conservation biologist Fred Bercovitch explores koalas’ vulnerabilities and how this emblematic marsupial offers a compelling window into the evolutionary forces that shape animal behavior. Although koalas are typically solitary, their reproductive behavior is surprisingly socially complex. They exemplify sexual selection, a concept first described by Charles Darwin, in which competition for and choice of mates drive evolutionary change.

Bercovitch also examines the koala’s highly specialized feeding ecology, including its dependence on eucalyptus leaves—a diet with physiological challenges and trade-offs. This narrow niche, combined with a low-energy lifestyle, limits the species’ ability to adapt to rapid environmental change.

Bercovitch puts these biological insights in a broader conservation context. The number of koalas dropped drastically in the late 19th and early 20th centuries because they were hunted for their fur. Today, they are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s list of endangered species, classified as vulnerable to extinction as their numbers have plummeted by close to 30% in the last three decades. Habitat loss, climate change, and other human-driven pressures continue to threaten their survival.
