Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs is known for her crime novels chronicling the adventures of Temperance “Bones” Brennan, a forensic anthropologist at the fictional Jeffersonian Institute (sound familiar?). Reichs was also producer of the popular TV series “Bones,” which centered on the character.
Her latest thriller, Fire and Bones, finds Brennan at the center of a Washington, D.C., arson investigation that spawns deepening levels of mystery and, ultimately, violence. Teaming with a television journalist, she learns that in the 1930s and ’40s the arson site was the hangout of a group of bootleggers and racketeers known as the Foggy Bottom Gang. Things get even hotter when the son of a gang member is killed in an affluent part of town and a second gang-linked location burns to the ground, adding another victim. Coincidence? Targeted attacks? Every path forward seems to bring a lethal threat to Brennan.
