Materials for this program

By Krista Sharp

This class introduces you to the fundamentals of bookbinding. Learn about the essential tools and materials needed to create your own handmade books, as well as a range of core techniques, including folding, sewing, and gluing.

During the class, create several different book structures, including:

  • Single-sheet books: Transform a single sheet of paper into a book using folds and cuts. This technique highlights how structure alone can create a functional and creative book form without stitching or adhesives.
  • Concertina (accordion) book with a non-adhesive cover: Create a folded, continuous strip of pages that expands outward like an accordion. You also learn how to design and attach a cover and spine without glue.
  • Pamphlet binding: Learn one of the simplest and most versatile sewing structures, in which folded pages are nested together and stitched through the spine. This technique is ideal for small booklets, zines, and journals.
  • Japanese stab binding: Explore a decorative binding method where single folded sheets are stacked and sewn together along one edge using exposed stitching patterns.
  • Long stitch binding with a soft cover: Sew signatures directly onto a flexible cover using long, visible stitches along the spine. This technique allows the book to open flat and is perfect for sketchbooks.
  • Case-bound double pamphlet: Combine two pamphlet-bound sections into a hard cover case, introducing you to more advanced construction techniques. This project demonstrates how multiple text blocks can be housed within a single durable book.

By the end of the workshop, you have a collection of unique handmade books and a solid foundation to continue exploring bookbinding on your own.
