Few composers have made a mark on film like Ennio Morricone. His reputation as a master of underscoring, deftly building psychological and emotional impact with music, earned him the Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2007, followed by the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2016 for The Hateful Eight. While he is perhaps best remembered for his work on spaghetti Westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), he composed and arranged scores for more than 400 film and television productions during a career that spanned more than six decades.

Film music scholar Franco Sciannameo, teaching professor emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University, examines episodes from the films Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Once Upon a Time … the Revolution (1971), and Once Upon a Time in America (1984) to illuminate the composer’s ability to bring viewers into the cinematic narrative, experiencing it almost as protagonists themselves.
