Explore attitudes toward gender through knitted objects in the Smithsonian collection. From coin purses to hats to needle sheaths and from England to South Africa to Peru, artifacts in the Smithsonian collections tell us how knitting both reflects and defines attitudes toward gender and sex. Across time and culture, knitting is not only beautiful and a practical art but also a commentary on the society it comes from.
