With Etruscan writings completely untranslated, modern scholarship draws most of its knowledge of the civilization from archaeological deposits in central Italy. Contemporaries of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Etruscans maintained a distinctive language and visual culture with an emphasis on the afterlife. Using three masterworks of Etruscan painting, sculpture, and metalwork excavated from tombs in central Italy, art historian Laura Morelli offers a glimpse into how members of this lesser-known culture adorned the places where they planned to spend eternity and the incredible luxury objects they took with them.
