Published in 1911 by one of the 20th century’s leading American authors, Edith Wharton, Ethan Frome tells a story of intense love and the yearning for a better life amid the harsh landscape and restrictive social mores of rural Starkfield, Massachusetts. Joseph Luzzi, a professor of literature at Bard College, explores the gorgeous prose and probing social analysis of Wharton’s novel, which offers illuminating insights on issues of gender, notions of class, and representations of desire and sexuality. He also discusses how Wharton’s sophisticated narrative techniques enable her to imbue her story with a level of aesthetic complexity that contributes to the work’s standing as an enduring classic of American literature.
