By Lauren Kingsland

The use of embroidery on quilts between 1865 and 2025 waxed and waned alongside fashions, social changes, materials, and the roles of women in domestic life and the workplace. Who had time to embroider and why? Tapping into the Smithsonian’s historic textile collection and contemporary sources, catch a glimpse of the lives of makers of embellished quilts over this 160-year period. During class, practice stitching while diving into these topics.
