Insects are frequent subjects of scientific drawings and paintings. To put them in an appropriate context, learn about insect classification and anatomy as well as relationships insects have with other forms of life. Collecting and preserving insects is discussed as is how to produce suitable reference photographs of insects for drawing. A short history of entomological illustration introduces various entomological drawing techniques. Conventions associated with drawing and painting insects are presented, emphasizing watercolor and colored pencil used both separately and in combination. Students have the opportunity to put what they learn into practice.
