Residents of the greater Washington, D.C., area have an abundance of riches in the many museums close by. Spend Saturday afternoons developing your rendering and composition skills by drawing from both paintings and sculptures at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery.

Guided by instructor Paul Glenshaw, students begin by learning the art of copying, which focuses on the way an artist created a particular work, not simply making a facsimile. They then delve into drawing classical sculptures, which make ideal models for drawing exercises and aid in honing figure-drawing skills.

An introduction to drawing in public, this class is designed for the strong beginner, intermediate, or advanced student who has taken a previous drawing class or has equivalent drawing experience. A list of supplies is available for downloading.

The first session meets in the Kogod Courtyard at the center of the joint museum complex.

Note: In-person programs are not recorded.
