Explore creative approaches to drawing animals and nature using both wet and dry media, from watercolor to charcoal and beyond. This course emphasizes experimentation through a variety of approaches such as gestural drawing and expressive line, with an emphasis on capturing the character and energy of animals while paying attention to shape alongside positive and negative space. These methods take shape through instructor-led demonstrations.
Drawing inspiration from Smithsonian’s National Zoo photographs and additional reference images, students practice careful observation and expressive sketching, moving between loose studies and more developed compositions. Throughout the class, students work toward finished drawings and paintings in a style of their choice, guided by individualized feedback. This class is open to all levels.
