Materials for this program

Please Note: This program will now be presented online via Zoom and be recorded (originally publicized as an in-person studio arts workshop).

Procreate for iPad contains powerful editing features that let artists reference and remix existing images in pursuit of their creative ideas. Combine with Smithsonian Open Access, where you can download, share, and reuse millions of the Smithsonian’s images—and you have a recipe for tremendous artistic expression.

This workshop teaches students how to access the Smithsonian Open Access digital collection, download images to their iPads, and import them into Procreate. With images imported, students learn techniques for photo manipulation including collage, transformation, color adjustments, and special effects.

Students also learn about usage rights when downloading images from the collection for their own digital artworks.

Students are encouraged to attend with an iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate to be ready to follow along and produce their artwork during the demonstration. If you are purchasing an iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate, please reference their compatibility.

Other digital drawing tools (computers, tablets, software) are welcomed, knowing the instructor has limited technical support for those tools.
