Resize text Bohemian glassware, ca. 1840–1860 From dazzling royal chandeliers to intricate glass flowers, Czech glassmaking has captivated the world for centuries. What began in the medieval regions of Bohemia and Silesia in the Czech Republic has since evolved into a world-renowned tradition celebrated for its unmatched artistry and innovation. Bohemian artisans revolutionized the craft by pioneering a stable form of clear glass combining potash and chalk, and earned international acclaim for their exceptional skill in cutting and engraving. With its silica-rich sand and dense forests, the region proved ideal for producing high-quality crystal, fueling the growth of the glass industry. Art historian Jennie Hirsh explores the evolution of Czech glass, from its early origins to the rise of companies like Swarovski (which later moved to Austria) and the post-1989 revival of the region known as Crystal Valley. She examines the innovative techniques that have defined Czech glassmaking, including cutting, engraving, and molding, and highlights the wide range of objects created—luxury items adorned with 24-karat gold or platinum, as well as more accessible works cherished by collectors worldwide. She also offers a virtual tour of the celebrated Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants at Harvard University—the iconic “Glass Flowers.” Between 1876 and 1936, father-and-son artisans Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka created over 4,300 intricate glass models of nearly 800 plant species. Hirsh examines the breathtaking beauty of these models and explores the insights modern conservation has uncovered about these exquisite and enduring works of art. Join Hirsh to explore the artistry, history, and ongoing appeal of Czech glass, and discover how this remarkable craft continues to shape tradition and innovation.
