Materials for this program

Delve into the history of cyanotypes, a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue and white print, and create your own cyanotype using chemistry to harness the transformative power of sunlight.

Learn about the introduction of this technique by a British scientist in the 20th century, who used it then, and who is using it in contemporary art. Experiment with the cyanotype process yourself after a conversational lecture.

The cyanotype process uses objects found in most homes, although cyanotype paper needs to be purchased by participants before the session. The class is appropriate for all experience levels as well as non-photographers interested in understanding the form’s technical and artistic evolution.
