British artist David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most important and creative artists of our time. Over the years of his long and continuing career, his style and subject matter have for the most part remained consistent and recognizable. He paints, draws, and prints charming portraits, landscapes, and interior scenes in a straightforward, somewhat-reductive style in flattened spaces with pure, vibrant colors.
But Hockney has demonstrated an amazing range and willingness to experiment with media. He is a painter, draftsman, printmaker, and photographer, and in recent years has also worked in digital media using computer apps and iPad drawing programs to create works that are ultimately either printed or viewed on screens. He has also had a robust career in the creation of stage sets and costumes.
