Materials for this program

This workshop introduces you to the flag book, a dynamic structure developed by book artist Hedi Kyle. Built from a simple accordion fold, the flag book transforms into an interactive object that emphasizes movement, rhythm, and sequence as the pages are opened and viewed from different angles.

We begin by creating a basic mock-up to help you understand the underlying structure and mechanics of the flag book. This step gives you a clear foundation in how the folded spine supports the attached “flags” and how the book expands and contracts in motion.

Once you are comfortable with the structure, you move into the creative phase of the workshop. Using materials you bring from home—such as photographs, patterned papers, drawings, or found images—you will design and construct your own collaged flag book. Emphasis is placed on composition, visual storytelling, and how imagery can interact across the moving panels.

By the end of the workshop, you have a finished, personalized flag book and a deeper understanding of how structure and movement can work together to create an engaging, sculptural book form.
