Materials for this program

Please Note: This class has an additional schedule changes.

The jewelry in the Cooper Hewitt’s Susan Grant Lewin Collection embodies the ingenious use of alternative materials such as plastics, paper, and found objects. Using the collection as an inspiration and with an emphasis on upcycled materials, students learn to refine readily available trash items into unique works of contemporary jewelry. The techniques that are covered include choosing and working with alternative materials with an emphasis on safety, using a jeweler's saw to cut precise one-of-a-kind shapes from sheet metal, and the cold connection techniques of riveting and tab-setting. Some previous jewelry-making experience is recommended (such as Introduction to Beading); previous metalwork experience is not required.

Note: This is the first of a series (stay tuned for related programs).
