Winston Churchill with Queen Elizabeth, 1953

Winston Churchill’s political career began when Queen Victoria was on the throne, spanned the reigns of four subsequent kings, and drew to a glorious close during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. As the grandson of a duke, his family naturally had close connections to the Crown. However, it was the experience gained over half a century at the forefront of British politics that made him an indispensable adviser upon the accession of the young queen.

Katherine Carter is the curator of Winston Churchill’s country home at Chartwell. Her 2022 exhibition “Churchill and the Crown” celebrated the special relationship between the young Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill, spanning from their first meeting—when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer (the second-highest role in British politics) and she was a 2-year-old princess—to the triumphant state funeral, a quarter of a century later, with which she chose to honor him. Using archive images from the display, she shares the history of this truly remarkable friendship that changed the course of history.
