Key Bridge

Architect and owner of DC Design Tours Carolyn Muraskin explores the rich engineering, architectural, and cultural history of Washington, D.C.’s most significant bridges. Trace how these structures have shaped movement, commerce, and identity in the nation’s capital from the 19th-century Old Aqueduct Bridge—once a vital link between Georgetown and Virginia—to the well-traveled Francis Scott Key Bridge and the historic Dumbarton and Chain bridges.

Muraskin examines how designers responded to the challenges of spanning the Potomac River and Rock Creek, highlighting innovations in materials, structural systems, and aesthetic ideals. The program also features landmark structures such as the soaring Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, the remarkable masonry arches of Cabin John Bridge, the picturesque Boulder Bridge in Rock Creek Park, and the Duke Ellington Bridge overlooking the same verdant corridor. Together, these crossings reveal a layered narrative of urban growth, transportation planning, and civic ambition, offering insight into their roles as both feats of engineering and enduring symbols of Washington’s evolving landscape.
