Explore for yourself how and why color elements interact within a composition, particularly when using found colors in the form of fabrics and papers. This class is for quiltmakers and other artists who want to strengthen their understanding of color through hands-on making.
Students create a series of 8 x 8” studies using fabric or paper, constructed by sewing, fusing, or gluing simple geometric shapes to a background layer. Each exercise illustrates a foundational color principle: value contrast, simultaneous contrast, temperature contrast, analogous color schemes, intensity (saturation), and tints, tones, and shades. The studies are constructed on foundations of muslin or paper in a quilt block pattern or simple strips to focus on color relationships. Students may adapt the size of their exercises if they wish.
Two color principles are introduced per week in the first three class sessions, through illustrations & demos, with time to experiment in class. Work in between classes is highly recommended. Students may treat the exercises as individual references or plan to combine them into a larger unified piece.
This course is ideal for makers who are comfortable with basic tools and materials and are ready to deepen their color confidence in a supportive, exploratory environment.
